11th December 2024 Exchange of Christmas Cards We had a lovely final session of 2024, not only did we bring in our Christmas cards we had created for our final project, we also had some drinks, nibbles and even a little bit of music. As ever, the standard of the Christmas cards was exceptional and a good time was had by all. I can't wait to get back to it next year. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
4th December 2024 Pouring Acrylics Demo with Wendy We had a tremendously exciting demo from our own Wendy with her pouring acrylics. Armed with paints, pouring medium, a straw, spatula and a vast array of pots, Wendy began by setting her canvas board on a rack in a tray before covering half in white paint then half in black and then the exciting stuff happened, the colour was applied. With a combination of blowing through her straw, shifting the paint with the spatula and applying heat she managed to create two amazing pieces of art before we finished. It's hard to put in words but watching the paint move about the canvas was truly captivating.
27th November 2024 Marbles and Ink Workshop We had a workshop run by Mike based on the techniques of Carmen Carpena who makes artwork using marbles and inks. We popped our marbles in tubs and poured in some acrylic ink before chucking the marbles on to the page and letting them roll around. It can get a bit messy if you're not too careful but it is a really enjoyable exercise, and the results speak for themselves.
20th November 2024 Own Work & Gel Plate Image Transfers We had an own work session so Mike decided to bring in his gel plates and run the workshop from earlier in the year for anyone who missed it the first time . It's such a fun technique and everyone got to grips with it really well, as you can see from the pictures below.

6th November 2024 Ten Week Project Review: Artist Trading Cards We had a lovely session reviewing everyone's artist trading cards and even better than usual, we got to take some pieces or art home with us. We all created three trading cards each and once we had discussed how and why we created them they were put in to a bag and we all chose three each to take home, an very enjoyable exercise and some lovely keepsakes too.
30th November 2024 Bubbles with Steve We had a really fun evening of experimenting with bubbles. Steve, she had been experimenting leading up to the session and gave us all an exciting demo of how to get the best out of the bubbles using acrylic inks, watercolour and even unexpected pigments like liquid coffee. A particular highlight was blowing the bubbles through a half bottle with some skrim on the end, I'll be trying that one at home for sure. Thanks Steve for such a well organised evening of play.
23rd October 2024 Painting Figures We had an enjoyable session of painting figures. We watched a selection of Youtube videos where the artists showed how to create simple figures in watercolour with a hope of being able to introduce these in to our landscape paintings to add a sense of scale and life to the piece. It was interesting to get different bits of advice from the three videos we watched and trying to combine it all in to making some lifelike figures without concentrating too much on details.
16th October 2024 Mark Making with Natural Objects We had an enjoyable evening of mark making with organic objects. Between us we brought in feathers, leaves, pine cones, pine needles, teasels, reeds, grass stems, shells, galls, and probably a few more things I have forgotten about. There was a lot of use of inks but everyone mostly did their own thing to produce some vibrant abstract pieces.
9th October 2024 Rice Paper Portraits with Mike This evening we had a workshop on experimenting with rice paper with our own Mike. The idea of the exercise was to paint a portrait, either in watercolour or acrylic ink, directly on to the rice paper which was taped on to the watercolour paper, spray this with water then remove the rice paper to see what has come through. It was great to see everyone getting stuck in and there were such an amazing variety of results as you can see below.
2nd October 2024 Refreshing an old Painting This evening we had an evening of adding collage to old paintings. We started by watching a couple of videos on Youtube, one where the artist collaged over a painting they were not happy with and a second where they used a painting they had created with the addition of collage in mind. It was an enjoyable exercise and was a good excuse to rip up and modify some old work that was laying around unloved.
25th September 2024 Life Drawing with Kim Cullimore This evening we had an exhilarating session of life drawing led by Kim Cullimore, you may have seen him in the square in the Summer doing some fantastic portraits. 18th September 2024 Animal Portraits with Janet This evening we had an animal painting masterclass from our own Janet Wildey. She started the session by giving us a demo of the mixed media methods she has been employing recently, she even brought in a few of her recent works of art for inspiration. Janet had a stack of reference pictures for us and also lots or art materials for us to use too. It was a really fun workshop and I can't wait to see the finished paintings as by the time we finished there were only a few animals starting to emerge.
11th September 2024 Painting in the Style of Annie Campbell This evening we took what we learned from the demo the week before from Annie and had a go at producing something in her style. It was very enjoyable to have a go, it meant stepping out of their comfort zone for some of the group but I'm sure you'll agree, everyone produced some lovely work.
4th September 2024 Demo by Annie Campbell We kicked off our new term with an inspiring demonstration by the very talented Annie Campbell. She brought in a number of her prints for us to get a feel for her style of work and after we had all had a peek she gave us a series of photos she had taken so we could choose which one she would paint. She has a lovely loose style and, with a limited palette, managed to create a beautiful, dynamic piece of art by the end of the session. She even managed to do a second painting for us before we finished for the evening. I can't wait until next week when we try out her style for ourselves.
28th August 2024 Ten Week Project Review: Artwork with Dorset as the Theme What an exciting evening, the review of our ten week project. Everybody outdid themselves and produced some fabulous pieces of work. We had such a variety of mediums on display, watercolour, acrylic, oils, lino cut, collage, pouring mediums and even a bit of stained glass. I can't wait to see them all hanging in our exhibition in October.
21st August 2024 Youtube Videos by Phil Starke This evening we had an educational session of Youtube videos from Phil Starke. We first watched a video on painting buildings, then a few on landscapes as we started to paint along. He gave some brilliant hints and tips which will certainly help me, if no one else.
14th August 2024 Artist Trading Cards with Steve Thanks to Steve for a brilliant evening working on artist trading cards. Steve brought in lots of beautiful examples of trading cards she had created plus loads of materials and mediums for us to use. 31st July 2024 Watercolour Techniques with Sue Thanks to our own Sue Smith for an inspiring demonstartion of different techniques and tools to enhance our watercolours. We had an evening of own work and chit chat. Some of the group revisited some of our recent sessions on big skies and floral watercolour and others chose to do something completely new, either way everyone had fun.
17th July 2024
Our visiting artist this week was Helen Talbot under the topic of BIG SKIES. Helen is always enthusiastic and a fun artist, she always encourages no holds bar -open up and make lots of marks experimenting with different mediums and techniques. 26th June 2024 Our first club night of term was a brainstorming session for our next ten week project, a piece of work with Dorset as the theme. The room was full of inspiration in the form of photos, sketch books and artwork, and we had a lively discussion about the many wonders of Dorset. There was mention of poets, authors, animals, stories, beauty spots and local attractions. I can't wait to see everyone's choice of subject matter.
19th June 2024 Concertina Sketchbook For our last club night of term it was time to show off our ten week projects, the concertina sketchbook. Our next club night is the introduction of our next ten week project, producing a piece of work with a Dorset theme in the hopes of displaying these in our exhibition later in the year, it's going to be exciting to see where everyone's inspiration lies.
12th June 2024 Sue Smith - Different ways with Portraits Our evening with Sue was super fun with lots of laughs and unexpected art work. Our first task was to draw from the right side of the brain this entailed turning the image inside down and drawing what you see. We then tried a silhouette of each other, please see below our final results.
5th June 2024 Kim Cullimore - Life drawing This was Kim's second visit to the Bournemouth Bay Art Group, we were very pleased to see him again, Kim has a very unique way of using a specific type of conte HB charcoal stick, using a small piece on the very edge to create an angled twist. We tired several short 2 minute sketching exercises with the model progressing to longer 10 min / 20min the results were amazing. The life drawing is always a very successful class but this particular class was a huge step forward for many of us. Mike's art work was voted by the class members the best work - well done Mike.
22nd May 2024 Janet Wildey - Portraits of children This is a difficult subject to tackle in watercolour but Janet did a fabulous job with us all individually, firstly she did a demonstration, sketching the image before taking out several horizontal and vertical lines with an eraser to soften the image then mixing watercolours for skin tones and hair. Children's proportions have to be taken into account otherwise it's very easy to make a young child look much older. A very challenging but rewarding project.
8th & 15th May 2024 A Look at the Art & Methods of Shirley Travena
On week one we watched an inspiring DVD, kindly brought in by Sue, where Shirley demonstrated her unique way of looking at still life painting using watercolour, and on week two we got to try her methods ourselves. It was a thoroughly enjoyable exercise with some beautiful results as you can see below.
1st MAY 2024
Mike made his debut demonstration with flying colours, it was based on a french artist Alexandra Demers (Alex Artiste Peintre on YouTube) uses slightly unusual techniques to achieve the abstract backgrounds for her art work. It was an enlightening look at the extreme lengths she goes to , but very inspirational and certainly gave the group lots of scope to use materials and hardware ! We all had a great time and Mike provided an array of eclectic items to achieve the final results. Thank you Mike for a different and excellent demo which pushes the group to look forward and progress an individual work.
20th and 27th March Over the these two weeks we used the first week to cover a board with a generous layer of modelling paste to create texture using many different techniques. For the second session using acrylic, a lively and colourful selection of paintings were produced.
